What is a podcast?
Podcasts are like prerecorded radio shows posted on the Internet. You can listen to a podcast online using your PC, or you can download it and listen whenever and wherever you please.
Listening a la carte
You can listen to MIT Enterprise Forum podcasts on the spot. You'll need just what you're using now to read this page -- a computer, a Web browser, and an Internet connection -- plus media player software such as Apple iTunes, QuickTime, or Windows Media Player. Your PC probably came with everything you need for listening to podcasts.
When you find a podcast that interests you, you'll find a link nearby to play it. Usually, just clicking on the link will start playing the podcast using your media player software.
Listening on the go
To listen to MIT Enterprise Forum podcasts on the go, you'll also need a portable mp3 player, such as an Apple iPod. There are many available makes and models of mp3 players, and some cell phones and PDAs also can play podcasts. Once you download a podcast to your mp3 player you can listen to it any time. The mp3 player will come with software and instructions for transferring podcast files from your PC to your listening device.
When you find a podcast that you want to download, use the nearby link to download it. Usually, right clicking on the link to a podcast will offer you the choice to save it on your PC.
Subscribing to MIT Enterprise Forum podcasts
Subscribing to MIT Enterprise Forum podcasts means you'll never miss a program. Subscribing entails installing software that automatically finds and downloads new episodes of your subscribed podcasts as they're released. Free software is available at iTunes.com, iPodderx.com or dopplerradio.net . Once you've installed the software, visit the MITEF Feedburner page to subscribe to our podcasts.
Many broadcast and professional organizations offer podcasts, including NPR and the Technology Alliance . As you find other podcast sources on the Web, you can subscribe to them, too. The software you choose determines the right steps to subscribing and listening to podcasts. It can sometimes be tricky, as the steps can vary between iPod, Windows and Mac. With patience and practice you'll be a podcast pro.
