The past 15 years were an unusual victory for the common person and the "garage" technology company, be they circuit board solderers, webmasters or content jockeys. Today, some entrepreneurs are (re)turning to advanced-science research innovations to create the next wave of solutions for market needs and business growth. Join us as we examine several exciting and unusual Northwest start-ups who are showing the way with early results in the complex new field of micron/nano-scale technology.
A panel of local pioneers in photonics and micro-electro-mechanical devices will discuss the practical business challenges to adapt technology breakthroughs to harsh markets, motivate PhDs, balance intellectual property protection with academic imperatives for openness, attract financing from non-traditional sources, and deftly avoid being "blinded by science" on the road to commercial success. They will be joined by a researcher for "Small Times", the trade publication of the emerging micro/nano business space and moderated by a Managing Director of one of the oldest national seed-stage funds focused on advanced-science ventures.
